What is your location?

And it’s probably even worse in Japan. I’d been warned that in Tokyo, house numbers are far from sequential, and that to cater for this, there are numerous maps – and even small ‘police boxes’ where you can ask for expert directions covering the last few hundred yards.
What really caught me out, though, was that the ‘local area’ street maps at the exit of the metro stations are not necessarily oriented so as to have North at the top of the map. That’s a really sneaky trick.
